my own lil' pumpkin patch

i was finally able to get some pumpkin seeds in the ground.
i have always wanted a pumpkin patch for the kids and i
to pick our own pumpkins for decorating and baking.

i planted cucurbita maxima otherwise known as big max.
the package says...grow the biggest jack~o~lantern in your
neighbourhood! may reach 100 lbs. also good for pies and
canning. there were 11 seeds...so potentially 1,100 lbs worth of
pumpkin flesh. how exciting.
i got a really late start on this but thanks to my son, david
and daddio...who tilled this ground about 4 times, i now have
at least the start of a pumpkin patch.
hopefully we will have a late frost and i can have some
of my own pumpkins from the garden.

i will keep you posted.

I had accidental pie pumpkins this summer. They grew on my compost pile. Unfortunately they ripened too early and I have four pumpkins in my kitchen. I'm not quite ready for that much fall yet!

I hope you get big, big pumpkins this fall girl.

How exciting, and I'm jealous! Can't wait to see those big pumpkins though.

I can't wait to make pumpkin pie; hoping there will be some at our farmers market. Maybe I can trade some bread for a pumpkin or two!

robin,

i always have something unknown growing on our compost pile too. i rescued a bleeding heart from the pile in the spring. pumpkins and fall are synonymous. i am looking forward to the cooler evenings of fall.
happy last days of summer.

I hope you get lots of pumpkins for your pies & such.
I had 1 little one that came up volunteer this Spring. Of course it was way too early for them. Sadly it rotted as a result of laying on the dirt as it grew. We had some hard rains at that time.
Maybe I'll try much later to get some here. Next yr. Old knee didn't let me do what I wanted too. Takes time to heal from surgery.

Oh, Marmee,
This is going to be so nice. To have your own pumpkin patch! You have so much room to plant and allow them to sprawl! It will be a good recompense for what you missed this summer. Sweet days, dear sister!
hugs, Meems

lola,

i hope you are recovering well from your surgery...healing does take time. i too have had those volunteers on the compost. it is always interesting to watch what they do.
maybe next yr you and i will get a jump on the pumpkin season and plant when we should.
happy last days of summer.

meems,

let's hope so. i layered on some good compost and our huskey thinks it is his new digging ground. i just don't know about this whole gardening adventures with so many dogs around. i really need to only plant in fenced in areas. one day i will learn that enough animals is enough...i feel i am on the precipice. it's only taken a half of a century.
here's to the last days of summer.
