many of you know that we homeschool abbey.
at the beginning of the year we did a study on insects and brought some
inside and released them over time. our terrarium was empty....or so we thought.
well lo and behold we had a surprise a few days ago when a beautiful black swallow tail
emerged from a cocoon.
we were all very happy to see her...especially abbey.
we decided to try to release her in the warmest part of the day
when the sun was shining.
but after a few hours of very cold weather i didn't think she
was going to make it out there and brought her back in.
we have nectar available to her and water but still we are not sure if she
will make it...
does anybody have any suggestions on keeping this beauty alive?

It's so pretty! How sad that it emerged when it is so cold! I probably would try to keep it alive as long as possible inside. Do you have a butterfly exhibit close to where you live?

If only you lived here! We have a butterfly house about twenty miles away but of course if you lived here you wouldn't have a Swallowtail anyway! What a beautiful creature, I do hope it survives and that you can perhaps find an expert who could take it on.
I would try to contact one of the butterfly conservatories (google for some ideas) and asking what they eat. Good luck.

No ideas but it sounds like you got some good suggestions. I hope she makes it.
Isn't she beautiful, Marmee??? BUT--I doubt she will make it out there with this horrible cold wave we are having. Try to keep her inside as long as possible.
I know that Houston has a neat Butterfly exhibit --but don't think Nashville has one.... Not sure!!!

What a wonderful thing to witness...what do their chrysalis look like? I have a frost burnt monarch chrysalis and caterpillar in the garden right now.
Having a butterfly in January is a surprise and a blessing.
Please give this one a special, "Hello" from me.
I would give him nectar in pots about the house and if at all possible find some garden flowers....a nursery with tropicals blooming would work. If you have a way of getting flowers when it is above freezing your Swallowtail could live until Spring! How very exciting.
