charming company

if the sages ask thee why
this charm is wasted on the earth and sky,
tell them, dear
that if eyes were made for seeing
then Beauty is it's own for being.

r.w.emerson

The very idea of a bird is a symbol and a suggestion to the poet. A bird seems to be at the top of the scale, so vehement and intense his life. . . . The beautiful vagabonds, endowed with every grace, masters of all climes, and knowing no bounds -- how many human aspirations are realised in their free, holiday-lives -- and how many suggestions to the poet in their flight and song!
John Burroughs (1837 - 1921), Birds and Poets, 1887

Use what talents you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best.
Henry Van Dyke

i am delighted to welcome one and all to our december feasting.
thank you charming visitors for coming by.

Love your birdfeeder! I have missed the birds--they have taken a vacation I guess, but the cold weather we had recently seemed to bring them back.

Very charming company, the best kind indeed!

I love those little birds! I'm with Meadowview-we haven't seen too many birds lately either. A few sparrows and that's just about it. Hopefully they will come back soon.

Sweet little birds.....and I love the prose.....I have not read them before.....they are very deep......

I remember many years ago listening to a wildlife expert.....somebody asked him why the birds sang all year.....he simply replied...."They sing for the sheer joy of being alive." I have always remembered........I try to think everyday that I am lucky to be here, and to enjoy everything I see.........

Marmee, I'm sitting on my back porch this morning... taking a few minutes to breathe in the song birds and re-group before another Christmas-filled day of busyness.LOL

Coming here to visit is just what I needed, too. The chickadees and red-bellied woodpeckers are some of my favorites. You DO have an abundance of birdies in all the wonderful woodsy area around you... what a blessing. Glad you are taking a few moments to enjoy them during your wintery weather.

It's been way too long for a visit, Marmee. Life does get a bit crazy this time of year but I sure do like your new welcoming look and dear chickadees and woodpeckers, personal favorites. Reminds me, I must post a picture of my HUGE handsome pileated woodpecker at the lake. Happy Holidays!

Hi Marmee, uh oh, it seems blogger is having a hiccup, will try again.

The Van Dyke passage speaks volumes about living your life, use your talents and sing to the heavens for the joy of it, not to compare to others. Thank you for showing us your charming visitors, they help make winter seem less cold.

It is exciting to see your birds. Good to know Tufted Tit Mouse and Chick-a-dee are having a nice dinner in Tennessee! Red Bellied is a fine bird to have in the backyard. I love them all.
The quotes you used are spot on!

hello frances,
it is a hard thing to learn not to compare yourself with others but God created us so individually with much variations. so happy the birds and creatures don't let anything stop them from singing and being. having them around does lessen the heaviness of winter days.
merry christmas season to you.

sherry,
there used to be a part of me that was always comparing myself to others but it holds you back. i wouldn't even post my images if i did that with yours. but we all see, feel, have an essence of what we value that needs sharing. i aspire to be a great photographer one day and capture what i see in my minds eye but until then i will keep snapping away and appreciate how far i have come. thanks my friend for always inspiring me to look closer.
the quotes help me to relate what is in my heart, too.
