The blood orange is a variety of orange (Citrus sinensis) with crimson, blood-colored flesh. The fruit is smaller than an average orange; its skin is usually pitted, but can be smooth. The distinctive dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanin, a pigment common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits.[1] Sometimes there is dark coloring on the exterior of the rind as well, depending on the variety of blood orange. The degree of coloration depends on light, temperature and variety.[2]
The blood orange is often described as a hybrid between the pomelo and the tangerine, but it is actually just a mutation of a sweet orange.[3]
try one if you haven't yet.

I don't like oranges........does this one taste real citrusy? I know a Florida Native and I don't eat oranges...........weird.
Beautiful and unusual. I've never seen them here but will look when I'm in the produce section this afternoon. I love trying new things.
Marnie
I love navel oranges---but not sure about the BLOOD orange.. Have never heard of it. Too bad it doesn't have a better name than "blood".... Sorta turned me off!!!! ha...
Interesting though...
Hugs,
Betsy
I will try to look at these oranges in a new light from now on. The word blood just kind of does me in with them though. The name rose orange would be so much more palatable-can we start a campaign to change the name?:)
I've never had one of these. Must try one. I do like red grapefruit.
Hello everybody...i thought the same thing....blood....what a horrible choice for a name. but once i tasted i was hooked. don't remember where i was but i was definitely changed.

happy september everyone!
I do like oranges but have never tasted one of these. I think they are pretty too! Like the first picture of it.
susie...please give them a try...you will not be dissapointed.
I love blood oranges but we only see them here for a very short time.
Marmee, I saw the comment you left at Betsy's blog about the photos and thought I would stop by and say hi.
To get them bigger you are going to have to go to a different template or at least take out the side border. The changed are made in the HTML on the layout page. If you are comfortable with that I can send you instructions. My email address in on my profile.

We had them when I was a child - I think they have stopped selling them around here.
